Getting out of my comfort zone!

It is still cold and wet in my part of the world and a great time for me to work on taking photos in different conditions. For the tree image below I was shooting in the rain, between showers and having lots of fun!

Ten things to think about before you shoot

Here are some things to think about before you shoot....

  1. Have you set the white colour balance for the light you are shooting in?
  2. Is aperture or time more important and hence a priority? If wanting to create a "frozen in time" image making sure time is short is important. On the other hand, making sure the depth of field is shallow enough  to bring the near object or person out of the page means setting a small F-stop.
  3. How will the camera estimate exposure? evaluative of the entire scene? spot metering?
  4. What is the light doing? Is now a good time to take the shot or do you need to wait?
  5. Is using "mirror lockup" and bracketing important to do here?
  6. How will you lead the viewer through the image?
  7. Our eyes naturally go to light areas, so where are the bright parts of the image?
  8. Auto focus or manual?
  9. What creative style will you be trying out?
  10. And finally - shoot for the waste basket and have fun! ☺

Two quick tips for you

Here are two quick tips....

1. Don't zoom in, move in!
2. Push right

With tip 1,  zooming in affects your depth of field by narrowing it as well as compressing things. If you move in you can keep your depth of field and often create a better composed image.

With tip 2, if you push the exposure right but without clipping (clipping is when you overexposing to render pure featureless white) then when adjusting the exposure during your post processing, less noise will now be present in the shadows.

Try these two tips and see what happens....

It's raining! Time to grab my camera!

It has been raining in my part of the world. I love taking photos in the rain or between showers. Light is bouncing off the floor, walls and
leaves. Almost every surface becomes a mirror!

Next time it rains in your neck of the wood - grab your camera and explore the neighbourhood.

Do you know your alphabet?

Do you use Z, S, C to lead the viewer through your image?

Create more depth in your images by using these simple shapes to link your key elements.

Here is one image that uses the "S" shape to good effect. I was here for about an hour with the temperature being around 3 degrees. I took a few shots but the presence of mum and daughter really made the image. Of course I waited until they strolled into the sunlight before taking the shot.

Here are a couple of recent images where I have intentionally wanted to lead the viewer through the scene.

I have a Small Challenge for You!

I am currently challenging myself by restricting locations I find to shoot to a radius of 50km (30 mi) from my home.

Here are some of the photos I've managed to get. All taken within an hour of sunrise. In these images, I used lines, "s" shapes and diagonals to walk the viewer through the scene - can you see them?

Challenge yourself and see what you come up with.
